Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi took the wraps off the Xiaomi Black Shark Helo gaming smartphone a few days ago. The gaming phone is an incremental upgrade over the Black Shark that the company introduced back in April 2018. The Black Shark is equipped with 6.01in AMOLED display which sports a resolution of 1080 x 2160 that makes up for a pixel density of only 402 PPI. The display is HDR10-compliant. At the heart, the Black Shark Helo features the flagship grade Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC (here, features a vapor chamber cooling system to prevent thermal throttling to help in extended gaming sessions) coupled with an Adreno 630 GPU aided by 6GB/8GB/a whopping 10GB of RAM and 64/128/256GB of internal storage respectively.

Unfortunately, A MicroSD card slot is not available for expandable storage. A rear-mounted fingerprint scanner and possibly Xiaomi’s face unlock are onboard as biometric authentication options.
Dual camera system

Photography is handled by a dual camera setup at the rear featuring a primary wide 12MP (f/1.75 lens) + a secondary 20MP (2x telephoto) (f/1.8 lens) sensors combination assisted by a dual-LED dual-tone flash. A 20MP (f/2.2) selfie camera is up front. The rear shooter can record video at a resolution of up to 4K @ 30fps. The front cam can record videos at a resolution of up to 1080p @ 30fps.
Battery and charging, connectivity, audio, and Android OS
A enormous 4000mAh battery is onboard to provide enough juice to the Xiaomi Black Shark Helo. A USB-C port for charging is onboard the device. having said that the device supports fast battery charging and so employs Qualcomm QuickCharge 3.0 charging standard.

Coming to the connectivity side of the device, it has got you covered with Dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 5.0 LE with support for aptX HD audio, A2DP and EDR, GPS for navigation and location-based services and more. Disappointingly, an audio jack is nowhere to be seen on the device. However, to make up for this, Xiaomi has equipped the gaming phone with front-facing stereo speakers for those intense gaming sessions.
The Black Shark Helo is most likely expected to run on Android 8Oreo-based MIUI 10 out of the box.
Pricing, availability and paint jobs and finishes
Coming to the pricing and availability, initially, the Xiaomi Black Shark Helo will only be available for purchase in China starting November 10. The gaming phone will set you back CNY 3,199/INR 33,730 and CNY 3,499/INR 36,893 for the 6GB/64GB and the 8GB/128GB variants respectively. The pricing and availability information regarding the 10GB/256GB is yet to be known and confirmed. The Black Shark Helo looks simple and modern by employing an 18:9 display with slim bezels side, top and bottom and also a premium looking and gaming-oriented back panel design. having said that, the device features a backlit Black Shark logo at the rear and also a backlit side strips. The logo and side-strip are RGB LED backlit and are customizable for notifications and much more.

Xiaomi has decided to bundle the device with an analog stick accessory for gaming. The 8GB and 6GB RAM variants will come bundled with only one analog controller. However, step up to the 10GB RAM model and you get two analog controllers.

Interestingly, The Black Shark Helo employs a dedicated chip by Pixelworks which helps the device to convert SDR content on the screen into HDR content in real time. with that said, an inbuilt game studio application provides the user the ability to tweak the CPU, display, sound and network and so helps create different gaming profiles for fine-tuning the gaming experience.
